    Hover & Sound – Chapter 3 (Eddie)

Eddie stared out at the green fields, trying to process that Jace — who was too young to have wanted anything close to death, or even understood what dying really meant — had tried to die.   “A few months ago,” Jace said. He shrugged and ran his hand through his hair. “It was stupid.”   “Jace!” How would Jace dying help Gemma?   Why did Eddie think it was Jace’s job to help Gemma?   Eddie put his face in his hands. Jace was allowed to want to die. His life was hard. But that didn’t mean it was a good idea to want to die.    Eddie…

    Hover & Sound – Chapter 2 (VJ)

VJ was out of his mind with indecision. The last summer before Eddie’s last year of school was almost over and VJ hadn’t said anything to him. By anything, he didn’t mean it literally. He meant he hadn’t told Eddie how he felt. He hadn’t told Eddie that at some point in the past decade or so he’d fallen in love with him, fallen so madly in love and the only reason he hadn’t crossed the line was because they were family — or supposed to be at least — and what if they broke up? VJ paced the halls of Falkhus. It didn’t help that Eddie was gone all…

    Hover & Sound – Chapter 1 (Eddie)

If you would like to read the two prologues that will be published alongside Hover & Sound’s core content, please check out the links below: Prologue 1 (Edvard Sr.) Journey of an Undone Man, [Supposedly] Spooky Stories, 2020 Prologue 2 (VJ) [Supposedly] Sappy Stories, 2021 – Present day   Falkhus was magical any season of the year. Set into the grasslands east of the strand, the ancient stone fortress boasted more hiding spots and odd corners than any game of seek-and-find could accommodate.    The stone was age-blackened and stood out against the surrounding green fields. In the summer, vibrant pink magnolias bloomed along the causeway that stretched across the lake. During…

    The Girl from the Caves

It was a dark and stormy night. Probably-maybe. Hamish hadn’t left the barn in a couple of days, so he wasn’t entirely sure on the weather, but it may as well have been dark and stormy. Hamish felt dark and stormy, deep in his soul.   An ominous scraping sound pulled his attention away from the baby rabbits he was nurturing. They scattered to the four corners of the pen and then immediately squished into the space between Hamish and the wall he leaned against.    “I have to get up,” he apologized. He could hear more scraping — a wood crate sliding across a rough-hewn wood floor —…

    The Haunted Birthday

Moonlight sparkled through the glass panes of Acheron and Nell’s bedroom. For once Nell and Ach had enjoyed a night of peace and quiet. It was Nell’s birthday, and so the other parents had ensured they got a full night’s rest. They had tucked the children in before bed, and the ones sneaking out were being monitored by the other parents. It was, for lack of a better analogy, the eye of the storm. The storm — the hundreds of children that occupied Nell’s life (not all his, but more than he had ever expected) — were the storm, and this precious moment with Ach in his arms was absolute…

    Flight of an Untamed Beast

Spence startled awake. His mind struggled to catch up with his racing heart. When he settled his breathing he could hear it: Outside, something growled deep in the night. He worked to even his breaths. Beyond their bedroom, a field of sheep bleated urgently. He leaned over the edge of the bed and pulled his small dagger off of the end table. On his other side, Hannah stirred. He turned to her, his ear fixated on the window at his back. “Did you hear that?” Hannah whispered. She looked out the window, into the thick fog of night. Spence growled, a mockery of the sound he’d heard earlier. The sheep…

    Night of an Unknown Murderer

Oisin had a mental list of things that rhymed with Spence: dense, which his love for Spence was; tense, which Spence was, fence, which Oisin and Spence liked to do when they trained.   There was sense, which was in a whole different, alluring, delectable, sensual category.   The word spence itself meant place where provisions are kept.   That was the best. Spence was the place where everything Oisin needed for happiness was kept: The love, the passion, the shadowed moments. The intensity, which was its own planet orbiting Spence.    Then there were experiences like tonight, when words like immense and defense came into play.   It started…

    Journey of an Undone Man

About 13 years ago…   Endings have a strange, circular way of feeling like beginnings. This was the beginning of an end. I lay in what some call final repose. Was I at peace with my death? In many ways, yes: I believed I deserved it, for having ruined the lives of so many I loved. Conversely, my loves lived on. My son would be alone without me, and the world continued its inexorable march toward an unknown destination: The end of times? The final solar showdown? Stardust?   Whatever it was, I would no longer be part of the journey.   Some of the dying feel peace, they say.…

    Our Next Book

Finding the right story after Blue Note has been a year long struggle. More than. We began Green Zone, the sequel, with Talise as the narrator. We switched to Niels. We tried Spence. We found a lot of things we want to do with the story, but something kept being wrong. Missing. We have written three full books, sent one through the the editing process, and scrapped it all. Until now. Scales in Blue will follow Jace and Corban (the dyed hair guard from the palace) during the same time frame as Blue Note. It’s the pieces we were missing, the story we wanted to tell. While we haven’t completed…
